Full stack Developer

GeoCat builds and maintains the open source software behind spatial data infrastructure for governments, research institutions and international organisations. Our catalogue, map server and desktop tooling run beneath national geoportals in dozens of countries, and we operate them as a managed platform for the organisations that would rather publish data than maintain servers.

We are looking for a full stack developer who is comfortable moving between the interface a data manager uses every day and the services behind it. You will work on the parts of the platform people actually see: search, metadata editing, map viewers and the dashboards around them.

What you will do

• Build and improve the front end of GeoNetwork and the GeoCat Live dashboard — search, metadata editors, map viewers and reporting.
• Work on the services behind them, from API endpoints to database queries against PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
• Turn a customer’s house style, thesauri and metadata profile into a configured, deployable environment.
• Contribute your work upstream to the open source projects we help steward.
• Keep an eye on accessibility and performance: these are public portals, used by people on every kind of device and connection.

What you bring

• Experience across the stack: modern JavaScript/TypeScript on the front end, and a server-side language — Java in our case — on the back.
• Familiarity with PostgreSQL and, ideally, PostGIS or another spatial database.
• An eye for interfaces that non-specialists can actually use; much of our audience does not know what a WFS endpoint is, and should not have to.
• Comfort in an open source codebase and in public code review.
• Fluent English; our team, our customers and our community all work in it.
