Software engineer

GeoCat builds and maintains the open source software behind spatial data infrastructure for governments, research institutions and international organisations. GeoNetwork, GeoServer and GeoCat Bridge run beneath national geoportals in dozens of countries — and our engineers lead those projects rather than just consume them.

We are looking for a software engineer to work on the server side of that stack: the catalogue, the map server and the services that connect them. You will spend your time on software that is public, auditable and used far beyond the customer who paid for the feature.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain features in GeoNetwork and GeoServer, from metadata handling to OGC service endpoints.
• Implement open standards — ISO 19115, OGC API, CSW, WMS, WFS, WCS, INSPIRE, DCAT — and help shape them where they are still being written.
• Work directly with the customers running our software, translating a real reporting obligation into a workable implementation.
• Contribute your work upstream, so the next organisation inherits it for free.
• Review code, write documentation and help keep releases tested, secure and on schedule.

What you bring

• Solid experience with Java and the ecosystem around it (Spring, Maven, PostgreSQL/PostGIS).
• Comfort working in a large, long-lived open source codebase — reading other people’s code as often as writing your own.
• An understanding of, or genuine appetite for, geospatial data and the standards that govern it.
• The ability to work with people who are not developers: data managers, policy teams and public sector IT.
• Fluent English; our team, our customers and our community all work in it.
